Abstract. The article deals with the study of the communicative and pragmatic characteristics of the discourse marker voilà in the French language. Based on examples taken from oral French discourse, the analysis of the functions and fundamental characteristics of this discourse unit is carried out. The research material consists of excerpts of authentic street interviews on various topics. Being one of the most frequent markers in French spontaneous oral speech, voilà is characterized by a high degree of polyfunctionality, as well as wide pragmatic possibilities. This discourse marker can perform many functions: complete enumerations, summarize or reformulate what has been said, confirm the words of the speaker or his interlocutor, express the speaker’s attitude to the discourse, facilitate the process of changing communicative roles, and ensure well-coordinated communication.
Keywords: French language, discourse marker, pragmatic potential, street interviews, spontaneous speech, discourse, polyfunctionality, functional and communicative characteristics.
