AbstractThis article presents an analysis of the author’s translation of the poem “Der Friede” by the German expressionist Alfred Henschke (pseudonym Klabund) into Russian. The research is conducted within the framework of integrative translation studies, which entails a rejection of a narrowly linguistic view of translation as a mere substitution of linguistic units. The source text is conceptualized as a complex, multi-layered artistic system that requires holistic reconstruction by means of a different language and culture. The primary goal of the work is to reconstruct the hierarchy of the translator’s conceptual and practical steps. Special attention is paid to the interrelation between the macro-strategy (the choice of a general approach, determined by the purpose of the translation and the identification of the semantic invariant — that which must be preserved at all costs) and micro-tactics (specific lexical, grammatical, and stylistic devices). The study focuses on analyzing the processes of re-creation (rather than literal copying) of the poem’s fabric of imagery, identifying instances of systemic compensation, where a loss at one level of the text is compensated for at another, as well as the role of hermeneutic interpretation as the primary stage that shapes the entire translation strategy.
