The simple word in Chinese: inflection, monosyllabicity, polysyllabicity, and quasi-complexity
AbstractThe aim of this study is to identify the specific characteristics of the simple word in Chinese as an isolating language. The study demonstrates that a simple inflected word in Chinese, when used without suffixation, occurs in its absolute form, i.e., in a form capable of acquiring a particular grammatical meaning in a given act of use. It follows that the optionality of inflectional markers in inflected words does not entail the optionality of particular grammatical meanings within the framework of existing grammatical categories. The optionality of grammatical markers contributes to the fact that the simple word in Chinese most frequently appears as monosyllabic. For the first time in Russian Sinological linguistics, the study describes the types of simple polysyllabic monomorphemic words and the reasons for their emergence in Chinese. The author introduces the notion of the “morphologically indivisible word,” defined as a simple polysyllabic word that is either a native Chinese word or an early borrowing consisting of a single root morpheme. The study also describes the types of quasi-complex words, demonstrates their connection to simple words in Chinese, and establishes the relationship among the notions of “morpheme,” “submorpheme,” and “asemanteme.” As a result, it is concluded that the processes underlying the formation of polysyllabic simple words indicate that the tendency toward the desemantization of meaningful syllables (in simple polysyllabic monomorphemic words) in Chinese is stronger than the tendency toward the semantization of asemantic syllables (in quasi-complex words), which overall reflects the increasing polysyllabification of words in Chinese.
