Abstract. The paper examines the key components of translation competence in the context of Japanese-to-Russian translation. Drawing on models proposed by both domestic and international scholars, the author identifies linguistic, textual, linguacultural, specialized, and technical components. The specifics of developing these components are illustrated with examples from the Japanese language. Particular attention is paid to the challenges inherent in translating Japanese, such as its unique writing system, syntactic structure, politeness levels, culture-specific terms, and the translation of historical texts. The analysis of a handwritten historical document is used to demonstrate the complex and integrated nature of translation competence. The article also explores the potential and limitations of modern technologies, specifically the use of artificial intelligence for handwritten text recognition, in developing the technical component of this competence. In conclusion, practical recommendations are offered for integrating the identified components into the curriculum for translator training programs specializing in Japanese.
Keywords: translation competence, Japanese language, competence components, cultural linguistics, handwritten text recognition, translation teaching methodology.
