XMom Construction in contemporary English as a manipulative tool
AbstractThis article explores the XMom construction as a manipulative tool in social media and mass media discourse. The research material is based on English-language articles, video fragments from social media, conversations on thematic forums, dictionary entries, and corpora. The novelty of the study lies in the analysis of contemporary material from the perspective of Construction Grammar, which makes it possible to define the general meaning of XMom construction with a stable slot Mom (alternating sometimes with dad or parent) and an open slot X. Relying on the theory of conceptual integration, it was revealed that, depending on the X component, the semantics of the XMom construction is specified, and via metaphoric and metonymic mappings the construction starts to designate some style of parenting (almond/crunchy/beige mom). This leads to the formation of stereotypes that influence attitudes towards different parenting styles and have axiological value. Some variations of the XMom construction have demonstrated the variability of the second component, where dad or parent can be used instead of mom. This trend suggests that the shift in gender roles is driven by the active involvement of both parents in their children’s lives.
